Pope Leo XIV became the inaugural American pontiff, marking the first instance in Catholic Church history where an individual born within the United States has been elevated to this position.

Bradon Peterson, who teaches religious studies at the University of Utah and identifies as a devoted Catholic, commented on this historical appointment.

“I believe his election is momentous,” said Brandon Peterson from the University of Utah, a religious studies professor. “Many individuals globally view him as a moral and leadership figure, regardless of their Catholic affiliation.”

Peterson mentioned that he was taken aback by the unprecedented decision.

The United States has maintained its status as a superpower, and this often causes anxiety regarding power imbalances," Peterson stated. "There seems to be an understanding that there should be representatives from the global community who can address those in authority candidly and ensure they remain answerable for their actions.

During Pope Leo XIV’s inaugural address, Peterson observed that the new pontiff indicated a continuation of Pope Francis’ legacy. He believes this direction will encourage the Church to place greater emphasis on supporting marginalized communities under Pope Leo XIV’s leadership.

"He has borrowed many of the same concepts and thematic elements that Francis employed – discussing how extending outreach to all people, as the Church encompasses everyone,” stated Peterson.

Peterson mentioned that the name Leo holds historical importance within the Catholic Church; the most recent figure associated with this name was Pope Leo XIII, who championed social and economic equity for marginalized communities.

Peterson suggested that by selecting that name, Pope Leo XIV might be signaling an intention to uphold and continue that particular legacy.

"Pope Leo the 13th was renowned for his teachings on social justice, with a special focus on safeguarding those who are vulnerable, particularly vulnerable workers. This initiated an ongoing series of significant Catholic doctrines on social justice that has had considerable influence during the past 130 years," explained Peterson.
