President Donald Trump of the United States has declared his intention to introduce a 100 percent tariff on movies from abroad, asserting that Hollywood faces "a very rapid decline" because of rivalry from international film industries.

On Sunday, Trump stated in a social media post that he had instructed the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to initiate the procedure for applying the tariff on "all" movies made in "other countries."

Various nations are providing numerous enticements to lure our filmmakers and production houses out of the United States," Trump stated on his Truth Social account. "Hollywood as well as countless other regions across the U.S.A. are suffering greatly due to this.

This is a coordinated action by other countries, hence posing a national security risk. On top of all this, it also involves messaging and propaganda!

Trump didn't provide specifics on how this tariff would function practically, particularly concerning whether it would affect movies made with filming and production spanning several nations.

Following Trump's designation in January of actors Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson, and Jon Voight as "special ambassadors" aimed at recovering business lost by Hollywood to other nations, he made this latest announcement.

Back then, Trump mentioned that the actors would serve as his “eyes and ears” as he aimed to initiate a “Golden Era of Hollywood.”

In recent years, Hollywood has encountered challenging economic circumstances due to the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 actors' and writers' strike.

Last year, Hollywood studios earned approximately $30 billion globally, which represents a decline of around 7% compared to 2023, as reported by Gower Street Analytics.

Although last year saw an enhancement over the revenue figures from 2020 and 2021, Gower Street Analytics reports that it remained roughly 20 percent short of the averages seen before the pandemic.
