Although Donald Trump has toyed with the notion of seeking a third presidential term — going so far as to tell reporters that there might be methods to overcome constitutional limitations — he seems to be retreating from this stance.

In a candid interview with NBC News’ ‘ Meet The Press ,” Trump eventually acknowledged that seeking a third term is "not permitted." As per the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, it is currently against the law for a president to attempt a third term in the Oval Office.

Donald Trump Announces No Third Run, Pinpoints JD Vance and Marco Rubio as Possible Heirs to the Throne

In the interview that aired Sunday morning (May 4), Trump told ‘ Meet the Press ’ moderator Kristen Welker :

“I’ll be an eight-year president, I’ll be a two-term president. I always thought that was very important. It’s something that, to the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do. I don’t know if that’s constitutional that they’re not allowing you to do it or anything else.”

During his recent interview, Trump mentioned receiving significant encouragement from supporters to make another bid for presidency, potentially running for a third term. Despite these calls, he stated his intention to adhere strictly to established guidelines this time. Later in the discussion, he pointed out Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as possible future leaders at the helm of the free world. Additionally, he emphasized several emerging figures within the Republican Party who show promise. This announcement came shortly after reports indicated that Donald Trump had experienced one of the lowest approval ratings—among presidents—in their first 100 days in office since 1945, according to a fresh survey.

Donald Trump Previously Stated He Was 'Not Kidding' About Seeking a Third Term

As stated before, in March, Donald Trump had an interview with NBC News regarding a potential third term. In a telephone conversation with host Kristen Welker, he claimed he wasn’t jesting when contemplating another presidential bid. He mentioned there were "ways" to achieve a third presidency. Trump informed Welker that securing a third term is possible through certain methods.

“Many individuals encourage me to take action. However, I generally inform them that we still have a considerable distance to cover. It’s quite early in the administration, so my focus remains on our present objectives.”

When pressed for clarification, he stated, "I'm not kidding around. However, we're still way too early into this." During an interview with NBC, they also inquired if Trump had seen proposals allowing him to pursue a third term. To this, he responded, "There are ways one can achieve such a thing."

NBC subsequently inquired whether one of the strategies entailed JD Vance, the Vice President, running for an additional office and then handing over Trump's current role. To this, he responded, "That’s one approach, but there are also several others." Nevertheless, upon being prompted to disclose another strategy, Trump merely answered, "No."
