GLALENA, Kan. — An organization is promoting inclusivity in basketball throughout Southeast Kansas.

The Special Olympics Kansas organized their inaugural "Basketball Camp for Youths with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities."

The group joined forces with "Pure Heart Basketball" at Galena High School.

Over thirty students ranging from third grade to high school, with varying skill levels, divided into smaller teams to develop their basketball abilities on the court.

Volunteers emerged to educate, with participants from nearby high schools such as Pittsburg and Galena.

The gathering focused on community inclusivity and took place beyond regular school hours.

Having the opportunity to showcase how welcoming our community is has been truly enjoyable," remarked Olivia Ryan, who serves as the Southeast Region Director for Special Olympics Kansas. "We've got multiple vendors participating and various skill levels represented.

"We're encouraging the community to join forces with us so that together, through our services and volunteer efforts, we can support the Special Olympics," explained Courtney Ingram, who owns Pure Heart Basketball and coordinates youth basketball programs.

Ingram aims to keep pushing for the inclusion of Special Olympics at all local events, ensuring everyone can participate regardless of the game.
