EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM — The Socorro Independent School District Board of Trustees has scheduled a special meeting for Monday, May 5, to address the possible non-renewal and dismissal of numerous teaching contracts for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year.

As per the meeting agenda, trustees are set to review proposals from district administrators aimed at not extending term contract agreements and ending probationary contracts as measures for reducing staff numbers.

The suggested modifications stem from program alterations, shifts in staffing formulas, and an ongoing decrease in student enrollment, as outlined in the meeting agenda.

Socorro Independent School District has projected that it must cut its budget by $38 million for the 2025-26 academic year, as previously reported by KTSM.

Included among those impacted are educators teaching fine arts, major academic disciplines, and vocational training programs at various middle and high schools.

Staff members who are affected also encompass elementary school educators whose classes have larger student-to-teacher ratios due to an accepted waiver for increased class sizes.

The meeting is set to start at 5:30 p.m. on Monday in the District Service Center Board Room located at 12440 Rojas Drive. The event will be accessible to the public and also available via live stream afterwards. this link .
