Small Plane Crashes Into California Neighborhood, Claiming Two Lives
A light airplane has crashed into a neighborhood in Simi Valley, California, resulting in two fatalities aboard the plane as well as damage to two houses, according to officials. A pet dog also perished in the incident.
Firefighters were dispatched, and law enforcement sealed off the roads, cautioning individuals to keep away from the vicinity.
Plumes of smoke were visible rising from the rooftop of a house in the Wood Ranch area of the neighborhood, located approximately 50 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
Debris was visible between the two houses.
The Ventura County Fire Department verified that people were present in both residences when the incident occurred; however, everyone managed to evacuate safely without any reported casualties. It was also stated that both houses suffered structural harm and were affected by the flames, according to officials.
Approximately 40 firefighters responded to the location.
Initially, officials stated that only one person had passed away. Subsequently, the Simi Valley Police Department announced that both the pilot and a passenger aboard the aircraft, along with their dog, did not survive.
As of Sunday, authorities had not released any information about the occupants of the single-engine Van’s RV-10, which is a popular home-built plane sold in kit form. They also did not say what might have caused the crash.
The plane crashed into the back garden and dining room of Arman Hovakemian’s home. Mr Hovakemian told the Los Angeles Times that he was doing work in the garden when he noticed the plane above, circling lower and lower in the hillside neighbourhood.
He rushed inside to fetch his wife, Armineh, along with their Pomeranian dog named Koko, and together they escaped from the premises. Shortly after, a loud explosion occurred where he had previously stood, as he recounted.
“I’m numb. It hasn’t sunk in yet,” Mr Hovakemian said. “We’re fortunate we were able to get out.”
In security video recorded by a neighbour that was viewed by the Times, the plane can be heard circling the neighbourhood for nearly three minutes and flying close to homes at points. In another video, the plane can be seen shooting straight up into the clouds then dropping down again.
An investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) was also at the scene on Saturday.
Peter Knudson, a spokesperson for the NTSB, stated that after documenting the aircraft debris, it will be transported to a protected location for additional examination.
The investigators plan to examine the airplane's service logs, meteorological predictions, transcripts from all air traffic control exchanges, eyewitness accounts, the captain's history, along with any security footage that could depict the aircraft.
In January, yet another Van’s RV-10 airplane crashed into a warehouse in Fullerton, located southeast of Los Angeles, as the pilot attempted an emergency landing. This accident resulted in the deaths of both the pilot and his adolescent daughter, along with injuries sustained by 19 individuals inside the building.
The initial report from the NTSB indicated that the aircraft seemed to have experienced an open door during the journey.
