May 3 (UPI) -- Two non-profit organizations revealed their plan to collaborate on publishing climate-focused studies, aiming to advance a congress-mandated evaluation that was significantly watered down during the Trump administration.

The American Geophysical Union along with the American Meteorological Society stated in a press release On Friday, they announced an invitation for submissions to a new special series of 29 peer-reviewed research journals concentrating on various facets of climate change within the United States.

"The initiative seeks to maintain the progress of the sixth National Climate Assessment, whose authors and team were laid off earlier this week by the Trump Administration, nearly a year after the project began," the organizations stated.

Mandated by Congress, the NCA relies on the most recent scientific studies to assess how climate change impacts the United States. This new special collection doesn’t supersede the NCA; rather, it establishes a way for this crucial work to persist.

Rachel Cleetus, among approximately 400 scientific contributors who participated in the forthcoming NCA report, verified that these groups have been dissolved. in a statement shared by the Union of Concerned Scientists, an organization that pushes for robust scientific investigation.

Cleetus stated that today, the Trump administration recklessly slashed a vital and all-encompassing U.S. climate science report by disregarding its authors unjustly without any justification or alternative strategy.

The sole winners from sabotaging or nullifying this report would be the fossil fuel sector and individuals looking to increase their oil and gas earnings regardless of harm to public health and national economic stability. It falls upon Congress to intervene and guarantee that the legally mandated study is carried out with rigorous scientific accuracy and presented promptly.

Cleetus additionally shared the content of an email sent to the researchers by the Trump administration, stating that the "scope" of the report was undergoing "re-evaluation."

While the Official site for the NCA indicates that the sixth version of the evaluation is scheduled to be released by early 2028, according to a statement on the site. The same source also reveals that the activities of the U.S. Global Change Research Program — responsible for conducting the NCA — are currently undergoing a review process.

David J. Stensrud, the AMS President, stated that the NCA represents a "thorough and meticulous synthesis and assessment" of the most recent climate science information, which is utilized by entities ranging from local enterprises to various federal government bodies and departments.

Our economy, well-being, and societal structure are all influenced by climate," Stensrud stated. "Although we can’t substitute the NCA, we at AMS view it as crucial to endorse and aid in growing this collective scientific endeavor for the advantage of both the American populace and people worldwide.
