U.S. stock market closed significantly higher on Monday as investors welcomed news of reduced tensions in the trade dispute between the United States and China, which had been causing volatility in international financial markets.

Key stock market indicators fluctuated narrowly during an upbeat trading session following remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump about a "complete overhaul" of ties with China, which would involve significant reductions in tariffs between the nations.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged by 2.8 percent, closing at 42,410.10.

The widely inclusive S&P 500 surged by 3.3% to reach 5,844.19, whereas the technology-focused Nasdaq Composite Index skyrocketed by 4.4% to hit 18,708.34.

"As evident from current trends, the market seems inclined toward de-escalation," stated Karl Haeling of LBBW.

After his return to the White House, Trump introduced tariffs of 145 percent on numerous Chinese imports, whereas Beijing retaliated by imposing levies of 125 percent on American products.

After weekend discussions among high-ranking officials in Switzerland, the U.S. decided to temporarily decrease its tariffs on Chinese products to 30 percent, whereas China will cut its rates down to 10 percent.

In addition to reduced tariffs, the announcements made alongside China and another pact signed with Britain last week “will persuade corporate executives that a comprehensive agreement will eventually be secured,” according to a note from Briefing.com.

"This should allow them to make investment/spend decisions," the note said.

Nevertheless, Haeling stated that both the agreement with Britain and Monday's declaration regarding China have many aspects that still need clarification, indicating that uncertainties persist.

The markets are anticipating next Tuesday’s release of the U.S. consumer price index for April, which will be closely examined for indications of how much tariffs contribute to inflationary pressures.
