Pope Election Elicits Praise: Lansing Diocese Expresses Delight
LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The response to the selection of America's first pontiff keeps growing, with church bells chiming across the globe—including locations within Lansing.
A number of local Catholics expressed their enthusiasm regarding the decision to 6 News, among them Bishop Boyea from the Diocese of Lansing. He offered insights into Pope Leo's stance as well as perspectives on what lies ahead for Catholics under his guidance.
The bishop appeared rather thrilled about hearing the news, expressing that this enthusiasm stems from a sense of curiosity regarding the church’s upcoming developments.
What caught Bishop Boyea’s attention today was that the Pope chose not to address everyone in English, highlighting his extensive background gained from serving as a spiritual guide in both Peru and Italy.
He mentions being surprised that the conclave chose an American, and he feels the hasty decision indicates promise for Pope Leo.
It appears to me that this transpired rather swiftly, indicating that there must have been an immediate broad agreement," stated Boyea. "His conduct today was exceptional; I was greatly impressed. The key points he addressed were peace and unity. These were the topics he emphasized during his address to everyone present, which left quite an impression.
Bishop Boyea suggests that the Pope's decision to adopt the name "Leo" indicates a dedication to the Church's social teachings, which stress the importance of looking after people who require assistance.
