Plane Crash Kills 2 People and Their Dog in L.A. Neighborhood

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. ( KTLA — A small aircraft crash in a Los Angeles neighborhood on Saturday resulted in fatalities including two people and their dog.

Around 1:51 p.m., approximately 40 firefighters rushed to reports indicating that an aircraft had collided with two houses in the Wood Ranch area of Simi Valley, where smoke was visible, as confirmed by authorities.

The Simi Valley Police Department released an alert At 2:40 PM, they informed the public about a plane crash close to High Meadow Street, which had shut down the road, urging residents to stay away from the vicinity.

The Ventura County Fire Department posted to X after 4 p.m., saying that preliminary reports indicated one fatality in the aircraft. At 8 p.m., VCFD confirmed two people were killed in the crash — the pilot and a passenger — along with a dog.

“The FAA stated that an RV-10 aircraft owned by Vans crashed close to High Meadow Street and Wood Ranch Parkway in Simo Valley, California, at approximately 2:10 p.m. local time on Saturday, May 3rd. This plane had taken off from William J. Fox Airfield in Lancaster with Camarillo Airport as its destination. Both the FAA and NTSB will be conducting investigations into this incident.”

The sting operation carried out by KNN involved speaking with a homeowner who mentioned that while he was cutting back vegetation near his house, he noticed the aircraft. He described the plane as potentially being confused or encountering difficulties.

He headed home to inform his spouse about what had happened, but as he did so, the aircraft nosedived and crashed precisely at the spot where he had been cutting back foliage," according to KNN. "He barely avoided being killed when the plane struck, and soon after, his house burst into flames.

Authorities stated that the blaze reached two two-story, single-family residences, with occupants present when the incident occurred. Nevertheless, everyone managed to escape safely. The Volusia County Fire Department confirmed that apart from this, no further casualties were recorded; however, the properties suffered significant structural harm.

The identities of the victims who passed away were not promptly disclosed.

VCFD said the fire was knocked down as of 4 p.m.

It will likely be weeks before the NTSB releases preliminary findings on the Simi Valley crash. A final report comes months later, according to the Associated Press.
