Mass. Top Cop Details New Academy Training Changes
A day after outlining the forthcoming adjustments at the Massachusetts State Police Academy in response to a cadet’s demise the previous year, the head of the department stated that modifications are essential though they have not been finalized just yet.
On September 13, 2024, Enrique Delgado-Garcia, who was 25 years old and from Worcester, passed away at a hospital one day following a boxing session held at the Massachusetts State Police Academy located in New Braintree. A group will commence in May, with another set starting at some point during late summer.
"This will enable us to enhance mentoring relationships between the instructors and the recruits. It will help guarantee every recruit receives the individualized attention they deserve and equips them with the necessary tools for successful training," he stated.

Last year The academy put an end to all full-contact boxing training sessions, and the acting colonel at the time mandated a thorough examination of the defensive tactics curriculum. This suspension of the program continues to be in effect.
"It’s difficult to argue for the importance of a boxing program in modern policing," stated Louis Aloise, who represents the Delgado-Garcia family.

Gov. Maura Healey also called for an investigation and instructed the division to revise its educational courses.
Noble raised the position of Academy Commandant from Detective Lieutenant to Captain and assigned longtime officer Capt. David Pinkham to this role.
Todd McGhee, who previously served as the defensive tactics director for the Massachusetts State Police, stated that splitting the upcoming class into two groups will have significant effects.
Maybe we should increase supervision and ensure greater responsibility among personnel for recruitment," McGhee stated. "Several batches have exceeded 200 recruits. It’s essential to maintain oversight and guarantee proper regulations during all fitness activities.

The academy’s curriculum is currently undergoing an external assessment conducted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. The department has committed to making the outcomes of this evaluation public.
