WARWICK, R.I. (WPFI) — According to Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha, the individual found guilty of robbing a Warwick bank at gunpoint and subsequently fleeing the scene, leading to a collision during pursuit, has been sentenced to serve a minimum of 18 years in prison.

Roy Mangum, aged 40, entered a plea of no contest to charges including three counts of first-degree robbery, evading law enforcement officers through an extreme speeding pursuit, reckless driving causing significant physical harm, possessing a deadly weapon during the commission of a violent offense, being found with a firearm after conviction for a violent felony, and carrying a handgun without proper authorization.

Mangum was arrested in January 2024 once he entered the TD Bank on West Shore Road and brandished a pistol at three tellers.

The police stated that Mangum leaped over the counter, took more than $5,000 from the cash register, and then fled the banking premises.

Mangum departed in a dark-colored pickup truck, and a police officer noticed it racing along Warwick Avenue. According to authorities, Mangum disregarded orders to stop and initiated a high-velocity pursuit as he sped from Warwick Avenue onto Airport Road.

The pursuit, which occasionally hit speeds over 100 mph, came to an end when Mangum collided with a vehicle coming from the opposite direction. where Airport Road meets Post Road.

The police stated that Mangum, who still possessed the pilfered money, was apprehended after the collision. The occupants of the second vehicle, including two small kids, were rushed to the hospital due to severe injuries sustained in the accident.

On Wednesday, Mangum was handed a sentence of 35 years behind bars, with 18 years to be served immediately, succeeded by 35 years of probation.

Neronha stated that Mangum’s long sentence "corresponds to the seriousness of his offenses."

"Regrettably, Mangum's deeds do not resemble the storyline of an action film, but instead represent genuine offenses that show a complete lack of respect for both legal boundaries and community security," stated Neronha.
