Kansas High School Student Tragically Dies Following In-Class Medical Emergency

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (WDAF) — A 15-year-old female student passed away following a medical crisis that occurred inside a Kansas City high school classroom last week.

As stated by the teenager's family, on Thursday, April 24, Asia Green reported to her instructor at Piper High School that she was having trouble breathing while attending class.

The family informed FOX4 that the teacher advised Green to use an inhaler, however, it was ineffective.

Soon afterward, the teenager fell down and injured their head; according to the family, this prompted a staff member to administer CPR while someone else guided the other students from the room.

The staff dialed 911, and upon the arrival of the emergency responders, the family reported that they managed to restore Green’s pulse; however, she had been deprived of oxygen for an unspecified duration.

Even though they tried their best, the family verified that Green passed away on Sunday due to issues arising from the incident.

The Greens mentioned that she didn't have any previous heart problems; nonetheless, physicians informed them that she passed away due to cardiac arrest.

David Stewart serves as both Green's sibling and caregiver. Eight years prior, their mother passed away from cancer. According to Stewart, she had a deep affection for nature and wildlife.

My best friend. I don’t think there’s anybody else in the world who could have experienced what we went through together like siblings," Stewart stated. "She meant so much more to me than just being my child or my sibling; she was beyond anything. We did everything side by side.

On last Thursday, he brought the 15-year-old student to Piper High School. According to his account, an administrator informed him that Green experienced difficulty breathing during class time. Additionally, he mentioned that one of the teachers initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and school personnel retrieved an automated external defibrillator (AED). However, they found out later that she did not have a rhythm suitable for shocking with the device.

The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department stated that emergency personnel reached Green's location within seven minutes.

The paramedics initiated advanced life support and continued performing CPR. Green passed away on Sunday at the hospital.

I simply miss her," Stewart stated. "Throughout the entire situation, I maintained my hope, always believing she might awaken until the last moment, but she never did, and it's just difficult.

Piper schools sent in a statement to FOX4 saying in part:

We offer our most sincere sympathies to the student's family, friends, and dear ones.

The district mentioned that counseling and support services are accessible for both students and staff members. To cope with his sorrow, Stewart has initiated the Asia Green Foundation in memory of his sister.

"I aim to ensure that appropriate equipment for dealing with cardiac arrests is available, with a kit on each floor and at every part of every school, ensuring that there’s always someone prepared to assist a student or perhaps even a teacher who might experience a cardiac arrest," Stewart stated.

Authorities suspect the missing woman from Kansas is probably deceased.

He additionally mentioned that the teenager had no prior heart problems.

Following the tragedy, a representative from the Piper School District released an official statement addressing Green’s death:

We deeply regret to inform you about the death of a Piper High School student after they experienced a medical emergency at school last week. To honor the family’s request for privacy and comply with legal guidelines, we won’t disclose any specific health information regarding this incident.

Our team reacted instantly, and emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes to offer assistance. The student’s relatives were informed without delay and have received continuous support.

This is an incredibly difficult time for our entire Piper community. Counseling and support services are being made available to students and staff as we navigate this heartbreaking loss together.

We extend our deepest condolences to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones. We ask for continued compassion, respect, and privacy for all those affected.”
