CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – As Memorial Day approaches and marks the informal beginning of summer, the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is urging motorists to "Buckle Up or Face Fines," particularly during that holiday period and the seven days preceding it.

Sheriff Dustin Heuerman stated that his department will join a national campaign for increased visibility of seat belt enforcement beginning on May 16th and continuing until Memorial Day. The deputies are adopting a "no excuses" policy and plan to hand out tickets around the clock during this period.

Everyone should make wearing seat belts second nature," stated Sheriff Heuerman. "This practice isn’t only safe but also mandated by law. Throughout this initiative, various law enforcement organizations will collaborate to spread awareness among all motorists and their passengers. The easiest method to lessen injuries or potentially save lives during collisions is simply by fastening your seatbelt.

Heuerman mentioned that the State of Illinois saw an impressive 92.4% daytime seat belt use rate last year; however, this implies that 7.6% of individuals require further encouragement. Although law enforcement efforts will target both day and night periods, the "Click It or Ticket" initiative particularly emphasizes nocturnal compliance since traffic accident statistics from Illinois show that deadly collisions occur more frequently during the night hours.

Forty years ago, Illinois became the third state in the U.S. to implement a seatbelt law mandating their usage by all passengers in vehicles. This legislation saw an enhancement in 2003 when authorities were granted permission to stop and fine motorists exclusively for not wearing seatbelts, resulting in a notable rise in adherence rates.

Statistics indicate that seatbelt use increased dramatically from 16% in 1985 to 92.4% in 2024.

The "Click It or Ticket" initiative is supported using federal highway safety funds managed by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
