High School Students Transform Chicopee: Annual Clean Sweep Makes City Sparkle
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) — Local students dedicated their Friday morning to a community cleanup initiative in Chicopee. They joined forces to enhance the beauty of the city by collecting trash and tidying up sidewalks throughout the area.
The students from Springfield Renaissance School didn't hesitate to roll up their sleeves as they contributed to keeping their town tidy. Utilizing donations, these enthusiastic learners set out to spruce up various spots such as the area surrounding Chicopee City Hall, the scenic Chicopee Canal Walk, the welcoming Chicopee Public Library, and the vibrant RiverMill Center.
"To try this out and really clean up all the clutter from the sidewalks—it's great; it feels much fresher," stated Kayla Hidalgo, a student at Springfield Renaissance School.
A fellow student from Springfield Renaissance School, Nylene Rodriguez, commented, "It’s rewarding because when people pass by, they won’t encounter trash scattered around. Instead, they will only see nature."
This event is part of the fifth yearly Chicopee Clean Sweep organized by the Chicopee Cultural Council and the Chicopee Chamber of Commerce, working together with the City of Chicopee. Students can participate in this initiative via the United Way Pioneer Valley program.
The students are dedicating their time to collect garbage and securely package it. This effort aims at enhancing the beauty of the city as well as safeguarding the natural surroundings. "It's crucial to instill these values from an early age. Therefore, we must emphasize that they should never litter and instead become individuals who cooperate with nature," stated Monica Torres, the Community & Special Projects Liaison for the Chicopee Mayor’s Office.
Through their altruistic deeds, the Chicopee officials aim to encourage others to maintain their environment. "It's crucial for your town to appear attractive and welcoming," Torres stated. "Imagine taking a stroll and feeling at ease within your community, navigating your city with pride and saying, 'I'm proud of my origins.'"
By the conclusion of the event, Chicopee Facility’s team collected the bags and transported them to the Department of Public Works (DPW).
Another pristine cleanup is scheduled for Saturday featuring a fresh batch of volunteers. These helpers will make stops at various rivers, parks, and multiple neighborhoods across the city.
