In another part of the finale, Alberta came to terms with the possibility that she might have harbored feelings for Pete all along but had simply ignored them. She thought perhaps someone as kind-hearted as Pete could be precisely what she needed. Upon overhearing this revelation, Pete hastily departed the premises, prompting Alberta to conclude that her realization may have arrived too late—especially since Pete was reportedly involved with Donna at the time. However, Pete soon came back to announce that his departure was actually intended to end things with Donna. Following this announcement, Pete and Alberta shared a passionate embrace which momentarily took Alberta’s breath away.

“Oh dear,” Alberta exclaimed, to which Pete responded, “It’s all about lip strength. I used to play the oboe.”

Here, showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman explain why this moment is perfect for Pete and Alberta to advance their relationship further, as well as discuss the implications of Jay’s agreement with Elias for his upcoming storyline.

Why did you choose to conclude this season with the recent Jay and Elias twist after exploring various ending scenarios over the last three seasons?

JOE WISEMAN | We didn’t want to repeat ourselves with yet another scene like “Someone was dragged away.” We aimed for a new kind of suspenseful ending instead. The idea involving Elias has been developing throughout this season. Earlier episodes hinted at his potential return and ability to assume human appearance. In one particular closing sequence, we witnessed him conversing with Jay about whether or not Jay would agree to make a deal with him. It seemed fitting that Jay might have unknowingly entered into such an arrangement with what amounts to the devil himself, leading Elias to pursue him aggressively as part of his plan to eliminate Jay and claim what’s owed to him.

JOE PORT | For me, the underlying theme of the season revolved around striving for success and the potential downsides once you achieve it. Clearly, this scenario exemplifies one such pitfall. Obviously, this wasn’t the path he envisioned to attain his goals. It’s been quite a journey for Sam. and Jay. As discussed prior to the big unveiling in this episode, they have made significant progress, yet their connection with the ghosts has placed them in a delicate position.

What possibilities does this twist introduce for the storyline as you consider the upcoming season?

WISEMAN | Sure, we can't disclose all the details, but clearly, Sam and the spirits will need to find a means to rescue Jay from his predicament.

PORT | I believe Sam has made considerable efforts to assist and soothe the ghosts, with Jay frequently finding himself as merely an observer in these scenarios. As this new season begins, some of these relationships might be reaching a critical point. Logically speaking, the spirits should have alerted them about Elias disclosing his ability to turn into a living demon for soul collection. However, perhaps they deemed such information wasn’t significant enough to warrant their attention.

| Are you envisioning that you'll enjoy many close calls next season? Could this potentially transform into something like a Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner scenario?

WISEMAN | [ Laughs I'm not sure if we’ll go that far, but at the absolute end of the scene where Pete and Alberta share a kiss, we briefly hear Jay expressing his fear about using the toaster. Thus, viewers will definitely witness some signs of Jay’s reluctance to undertake various actions.

What was Utkarsh Ambudkar's experience? How did he respond to this plot turn? Was he concerned about its implications for himself and his character?

PORT | No, he appeared quite interested. We presented it to him, and indeed, he was thrilled.

The final scene of the season is indeed not Regarding Jay and Elias, it’s about Pete and Alberta sharing a kiss. Why did you want to end the season with that scene?

WISEMAN | It's quite a significant moment for the show. Ever since Season 1, Pete has shown his feelings for her, and we’ve gradually worked through Alberta’s hesitations with a deliberate pace. So, it seemed right. It was time to bring them together.

PORT | I believe each of them experienced times when they were highly interested and others when they weren’t. We managed to find an opening where they were simultaneously receptive to love and eager to see potential together, and now we’re looking forward to exploring their evolving relationship dynamics.

A few episodes back, I wondered if Alberta truly liked Pete for the correct motives since she saw him as the rebellious type. However, in this latest episode, she comes to understand that perhaps it’s the decent side of Pete that she actually needs. Did it matter to you to establish that difference when bringing their relationship forward?

PORT | I totally agreed; Pinnock absolutely aced that speech. She has such talent—she’s hilarious yet can handle intense scenes beautifully too. It was thrilling to provide her with this opportunity where she could really shine. Indeed, part of our mission for this character has been helping her understand her true value and recognize that she deserves a relationship filled with mutual respect and equality.

So can we conclude that they will become a pair now?

WISEMAN | Well, seems like it.

Over the various seasons, you’ve experienced several supernatural relationships: Flower and Thor, Hetty and Trevor, Isaac and Nigel. What sets apart Pete and Alberta, making their dynamic uniquely intriguing for exploration in the upcoming season?

PORT | There are two individuals here who face significant challenges since each has experienced considerable pain and difficult romantic encounters in the past. Therefore, taking this step together demands substantial trust from both sides, with much depending on how things turn out if everything doesn’t work out as hoped. The catch is that these folks are essentially confined within the same house—though Pete does technically have the option to exit. Laughs But essentially, they're glued together. Therefore, a great deal depends on it.

| Has the two-season renewal Has it changed your approach for the upcoming season? Does it provide you with more flexibility? Do you think, "Let’s save this for Season 6"?

WISEMAN | I mean, it does carry that potential. Having around 44 episodes gives us quite a bit of room to strategize things. While it may not significantly impact our current discussions, when planning storylines and such, it’s great knowing we can think more flexibly—like deciding perhaps we won’t delve so deep into certain areas. Thus, having those extra episodes certainly provides a welcome comfort.

PORT | Some narratives we have discussed evolved throughout two seasons. Therefore, should we choose to pursue those paths, it certainly would be beneficial.
