Fire Trucks & Sirens: Avoca Fire Dept. Invites Curious Minds to Touch-A-Truck Event

Kids of every age convened in Avoca for an intimate encounter with a range of trucks and emergency service vehicles.

Organized by the Avoca Fire Department, this touch-a-truck event showcased machinery and gear from more than 17 distinct groups.

Children mostly encounter our team during unfortunate events," explained Janice Lewis, who handles fundraising for the Avoca Fire Department. "By allowing them to witness us both in and out of uniform—since seeing firefighters or EMTs approach with various equipment can be scary—it helps demystify what we do.

Kids got the chance to clamber aboard all sorts of fire trucks, buses, ambulances, farming machines, and construction vehicles. Many also had fun honking horns at least once or twice.

The fundraising event is the most significant one this year for the Avoca Fire Department, with the money collected supporting the station’s regular operations.
