On a Friday morning, an accident occurred on a rural highway in Benton County resulting in the death of a 68-year-old man from Yakima and leaving two individuals injured.

James L. Sandall was driving away from the Vernita Rest Area close to the Vernita Bridge in a 2018 Chevrolet Corvette as he merged onto Highway 24 when a GMC Sierra pickup crashed into his vehicle, according to a traffic report issued by the Washington State Patrol.

The accident occurred around 11 a.m. on Friday.

Highway 24 is alternatively called the Hanford Highway since it traverses a significant portion of the Hanford nuclear reservation. Due to being a two-lane road, both directions can access and depart from the same Washington state rest stop located directly south of the Columbia River Bridge.

Sandall passed away at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland.

The occupant of the Corvette, Carrie A. Greenough, aged 62 from Yakima, along with Rhonda G. Procell, the driver of the GMC who was 66 years old and from Bovill, Idaho, were both transported to Kadlec, according to the state patrol. The condition of these individuals was not initially disclosed.

The passenger in the GMC, Robin D. Taylor, aged 65 from Rochester, Washington, did not sustain any injuries.

The WSP stated that everyone had their seat belts on.

No additional details were accessible by Friday night.
