Cubs Crush Four Homers in Dominant Win Over Pirates
Carson Kelly and Seiya Suzuki both hit home runs as part of their three-hit performances, with the Chicago Cubs collectively smashing four homers en route to a dominant 9-0 win against the hosting Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday evening.
The Cubs ended a two-game losing streak by handing the Pirates their third straight defeat and their fifth shutout loss of the season.
Shota Imanaga (3-1) tossed 87 pitches, giving up only six hits across five-plus scoreless innings. He struck out three batters and walked one, helping Chicago secure their fourth shutout victory this season. However, Imanaga had to leave the game because of leg cramps following a solo double from Andrew McCutchen at the beginning of the sixth inning.
The Cubs' relief pitchers limited Pittsburgh effectively with Daniel Palencia, Caleb Thielbar, and Tom Cosgrove collectively giving up just one hit across four scoreless innings.
Joey Bart had two hits out of two at-bats along with drawing two walks, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa added two more hits for the Pirates.
Palencia had Bart walk McCutchen following his double in the sixth inning, yet subsequently composed himself to retire the next three consecutive hitters and quell the danger.
In every spot of Chicago's batting order, there was at least one player who recorded a hit. Kelly contributed three RBIs, whereas both Suzuki and Kelly along with Pete Crow-Armstrong ended up with two RBIs apiece.
The course of the game changed significantly in the fourth inning following Pirates' starting pitcher Andrew Heaney (2-2), who managed to retire the first 11 batters consecutively at the beginning of the match.
Suzuki concluded that series with a two-out double to center field. Following him, Kelly hit his seventh homer of the year—a 418-foot shot to left-center—thus extending their lead. This home run broke Heaney’s streak of 20 consecutive innings without conceding any runs.
It was only through Tommy Pham’s solid defensive play, throwing out Michael Busch at second base when he attempted to stretch a hit into a double, that the frame concluded.
Heaney couldn't make it past the fifth inning after giving up a double to Nico Hoerner and a subsequent two-run homer in consecutive frames, courtesy of Crow-Armstrong. Over his next five plate appearances, he issued walks that filled the bases, which led to the Pirates' manager, Derek, making a decision.
After reaching 70 pitches, Shelton was substituted by Kyle Nicholas, who then got Kelly out on a ground ball as a relief pitcher.
