CHICAGO - A man from Chicago was taken into custody and faced charges related to a shooting incident in the South Loop area during the previous summer, which led Democratic National Convention representatives to seek safety by taking cover inside a restaurant.

On Monday, Delvin Bryant, aged 31, was apprehended by the Chicago Police Department and the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Task Force. He currently faces a felony weapon charge related to the incident that occurred on August 23, 2024, involving a shooting near the White Palace Grill located at 1159 South Canal Street.

According to police, Bryant discharged numerous rounds at a 42-year-old man who was exiting the restaurant approximately at 4:47 a.m. The individual sustained multiple injuries and was transported to Northwestern Hospital in stable condition.

The gunfire alarmed customers within the all-night diner, among them a party of Democratic delegates from Colorado who were at the convention.

The backstory

Colorado Representative Javier Mabrey, who was present in the eatery during the incident, stated that upon hearing the shots, everyone hid beneath the tables for safety.

"Everyone quickly went beneath the tables and believed that someone was inside the restaurant," he stated in the aftermath of the shooting.

The assailant escaped from the scene following the incident, and Bryant stayed elusive for over eight months.

According to police, Bryant faced one felony charge for having a weapon as someone with prior convictions.

He is set to show up in court for a detention hearing on Wednesday at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
