AMG's New V8 Is Set to Dominate: The Comeback That Leaves All in Its Wake
- AMG is working on a new flat-plane V8 engine equipped with mild-hybrid technology for upcoming vehicle models.
- The European Union’s combustion engine prohibition starts in 2035, providing Mercedes with additional time to produce V8 engines.
- The head of AMG suggested that this engine might be used in current models or in brand-new vehicle designs.
Despite the automotive sector stumbling towards electric vehicles like a three-legged shopping cart, Mercedes-AMG is ensuring that the V8 engine remains very much alive. The company faced considerable criticism for transforming the C63 into an AMG model. into a four-cylinder hybrid , and garnered significant attention upon confirming two high-power electric vehicles (EVs) for manufacturing. Still, fans will rejoice at the news that enthusiasts will be delighted to learn that AMG V8s We all know and adore them won't be disappearing anytime soon, at least for now.
Actually, enthusiasts of AMG’s characteristic V8 engines can relax somewhat, at least for the time being. As reported, AMG Boss Michael Schiebe, there's still hope for internal combustion engines, partly due to lenient regulations. Since the European Union has delayed their ban until 2035 and the U.S. hasn’t set a definitive end date for Internal Combustion Engines (ICE), we have "a few more years ahead with the V8," he notes.
Schiebe didn’t specify for how many more years the current engine might last, but it seems clear that AMG isn’t merely maintaining basic operations. Instead, they are actively developing a new generation of the V8 engine.

Speaking with Car and Driver Schiebe indicated that the new-generation V8 might be utilized across various upcoming models. This has sparked speculations ranging from hopeful to extremely ambitious, suggesting that the engine may also return in an updated version of the C63.
"We are currently working on the development of our next-generation V8 engine, and I believe there are several roles within our current lineup—or perhaps some entirely new ones—where incorporating a V8 would make sense," he stated.
We've been aware of the upcoming V8 engine for Mercedes-AMG For several months now, reports indicate that they plan to replace the cross-plane crankshaft used in their current V8 engines with a flat-plane crank instead. Additionally, the firm is working on equipping this engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This setup might integrate a starter generator within the transmission, potentially boosting output and enhancing fuel economy.
Schiebe strengthened the notion that AMG doesn't plan to fully commit to hybrid technology with this particular engine. As he put it, they don't "have to push so hard into hybridization," indicating that this new V8 will remain more true to its origins than many had worried.
That approach might also prolong the lifespan of models such as the AMG. GT 4-Door , with many expecting it to discreetly fade away as AMG introduces their fully electric performance sedan. However, according to Schiebe, this may not happen just yet.
“He wondered how much longer we will keep the GT 4-Door around,” he stated. “Perhaps there’ll be a replacement, but I’m not inclined to make guesses about it.”
While AMG’s future clearly leans towards electrification, the V8 engine isn’t being phased out anytime soon. In fact, it seems the company is reinforcing its expertise with internal combustion engines, at least for now.
