SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The people of Central New York are grieving over the death of Raymond Bernard Seals, an alumnus of Henninger High School and former defensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL. He sadly passed away on April 5, 2025. A memorial ceremony was held to celebrate his life and acknowledge the significant influence he had within the Syracuse community through his contributions.

The ceremony was brimming with tributes, anecdotes, and recollections of Seals, a figure defined by his unwavering resolve and laborious dedication, which allowed him to rise as an icon in both soccer and local circles.

Ray's adventure started in the bustling East Side of the city, particularly around Mulberry Square, before he rose to become a formidable figure in the NFL. Numerous spectators feel this success was evidence of his determination and faith that aspirations can be reached regardless of one's origins.

Mulberry Square, the entire housing project area—those locations can shape you positively or negatively depending on how much you let them," explained Mark Hall, a long-time friend. "Ray chose to let his environment influence him constructively, which really spurred his motivation.

Seals gained recognition not only for his achievements but also for his charitable contributions to the community and his role as a coach. His childhood friend and next-door neighbor, Carl Brown, stated, "We were always competitive." Therefore, success was their primary objective, and anyone who didn't give it their all could expect to discuss this fact throughout the evening," he added.

The talented football player from Syracuse inspired everyone nearby, offering them the power and resolve they required whenever necessary. Mike Cooper, a dear pal of his, stated, "No matter what, Ray wasn’t giving up. If something stood between him and his objective, he’d push past it; however, as he progressed, he pulled all of us right beside him."

Ray wasn’t about to let anything stop Ray. Instead, Ray planned to clear the path for Ray and do whatever necessary to achieve that goal. However, whenever Ray took action, it propelled all of us forward alongside Ray." – Mike Cooper

Cooper recalls the instance when that drive became evident for Seals, stating, "If you weren't aware of who Ray was, you would assume he’s just an exceptionally pleasant individual. Many folks tend to be outgoing and exuberant, yet Ray wasn’t like that. Instead, he allowed his performance on the field to speak volumes."

At the conclusion of the service, the enduring legacy of a man whose influence had reached many reminded us that regardless of one's origins, unwavering determination can lead to consistent success and excellence.
