The Australian harness racing community was stunned by the sudden death of esteemed trainer and driver Greg Sugars, who passed away unexpectedly at the young age of 40.

The renowned trainer and driver passed away peacefully in his sleep following a drive. New South Wales on Saturday to prepare his squad for the competition at Menangle.

His spouse, Jess Tubbs, shared the startling information on social media.

'Carrying a heart that's utterly broken and struggling to accept what might be true, I must convey the sad news that Greg peacefully passed away during the night,' Jess penned.

He enthusiastically drove our team to NSW yesterday, none of us having anticipated this would be our next venture.

His cherished son Harvey has not yet grasped that his father will not be returning to bring him to the Puppy School Graduation this coming Tuesday.

'We are heartbroken and very much still processing everything so some time and space will be appreciated.'

Harness Racing Victoria decided to cancel its meeting Saturday night in Melton 'out of respect for Greg and his family'.

"Harness Racing Victoria has conveyed its most sincere sympathies to the Sugars family, Jess Tubbs, and all associated participants following the devastating news of Greg Sugars' death," stated Harness Racing Victoria.

Homages for Sugars have inundated social media.

'The impact of such a tale goes beyond mere words. Greg Sugars still had plenty more to offer. Our condolences go out to the harness racing community,' wrote broadcaster Andrew Bensley.

The radio station SEN’s head Craig Hutchison shared this message: "Deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Greg Sugars today. It's devastating. He was a greatly admired and cherished champion driver in harness racing; our whole SEN crew sends their love and support to Jess, his family, and all those at HRV during this tough time. An amazing person gone too soon. Rest in peace."

Adam Hamilton shared: 'The sense of loss is overwhelming. The sorrow within the harness racing community globally cannot be measured. Such talent. Such an icon. A person who was so passionate and amazing. Farewell Greg Sugars.'

Sky Racing stated: "We are profoundly saddened by the loss of esteemed harness trainer and driver Greg Sugars. Our condolences go out to the Sugars family during this extremely difficult period."

Sugar, the offspring of renowned ex-trainer Ross Sugar, was highly recognized within the circles of harness racing.

Early this year, he announced the end of the remarkable career of his internationally acclaimed horse, Just Believe.

At the time of his passing, Sugars had coached an impressive 4028 victors, with 64 of them achieving success at the Group 1 level.
