Proposed Rate Hike Could Boost New Yorkers' Utility Bills by $50 Monthly
Should you be a National Grid customer, your bill might start increasing shortly, potentially adding up to an extra $50 each month.
The utility firm has sought approval for fresh electricity and gas prices tailored for Upstate New York clients, which would gradually roll out across three years. The decision rests with the Public Service Commission. According to Patrick Stella, a spokesperson from National Grid, some of the reasons behind this proposed price increase include the economic unpredictability along with uncertainties related to tariffs and purchasing power—feelings many consumers might share at present.
In May, the power company initially proposed a one-year plan that would have increased monthly costs for typical residential customers by $37 for both gas and electricity. However, following consideration of customer feedback and collaboration with state officials, the utility ultimately agreed upon different terms. three-year plan This would lower the initial monthly rate to $22. However, the current proposal pending with the PSC would result in an additional $50 per month for the typical residential consumer starting from year three. This amounts to an extra $600 annually. Stella highlights that there were 61 storms during the previous winter—out of which 24 impacted at least 15,000 customers or more. She mentioned, "The frequency of these storms keeps increasing, and this is something we aim to prepare ourselves against."

I inquired whether the utility company would price people out of warmth this coming winter. He responded, "Given that many customers might struggle with higher rates, we've expanded certain initiatives aimed at assisting those facing difficulties with their payments or financial challenges."
It's been four years since National Grid last raised their rates. According to Stella, this proposed adjustment follows four public hearing statements and over 1,600 responses gathered from informational requests.
