Thoughts at Random & Fascinating Matters

  • THE BEE GEES ("Stayin' Alive" group) The BEE GEES produced "Stayin' Alive" Forty-eight years ago, in 1977, as part of the film's score, Saturday Night Fever Besides being a remarkably infectious melody that might quickly get stuck in your head, “Stayin’Alive” serves as a helpful guide for individuals performing CPR, enabling them to administer chest compressions at the appropriate speed. This track contains approximately 103 beats each minute, which aligns well with the suggested range of 100-120 beats per minute required for effective CPR chest compressions.
  • TSA (23A: The organization aimed at preventing snakes on a plane (ideally)) Ha! That hint really amused me. It’s a great nod to the film from 2006. Snakes on a Plane .
  • ARE (27A: The "r" in "u r a qt") In textspeak, "u r a qt," stands for "you ARE a cutie."
  • GREASE (29A: Musical featuring the song "Summer Nights") The most recognized rendition of "Summer Nights" was performed by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. This recording took place in 1978 for the film based on the musical.
  • CONTOUR LINE (31A: Line on a topographic map indicating points of equal elevation) On a topographic map, a CONTOUR LINE links points with the same height above sea level.
  • EMO (45A: An aesthetic akin to "scene.") The scene subculture emerged in the 2000s from the EMO movement, which explains their similarities. Characteristics of scene style include skinny jeans, vibrantly colored garments, and straight, lengthy locks that may be tinted with bold hues.
  • The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), known as 60A for its designation in certain contexts like the annual Mystery Hunt, is situated in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Every year, approximately 120 groups—ranging from five to 150 participants per group—are pitted against one another in this intellectual challenge. These contests involve solving interconnected sets of puzzles aimed at achieving specific goals; during the MIT Mystery Hunt, these objectives culminate in locating a "coin" concealed somewhere within the institute’s grounds. This event takes place every January, with each new competition crafted by last year’s winning squad.

  • BRB (22D: Stands for "give me one second") BRB means "be right back."
  • Although I don’t apply the #NOFILTER hashtag when sharing posts online, I easily could because I generally avoid using filters. My primary reason for going with NO FILTER is that I often feel overwhelmed by the multitude of options available, making it difficult for me to choose one. Thus, I usually stick with no filter at all. Nonetheless, I fully support the idea behind this hashtag—to celebrate authentic beauty—which turns out to be an added bonus resulting from my hesitation.
  • EAGLE CAM (34D: This one can capture footage from high up in the nest) I find EAGLE CAMs incredibly fascinating because they offer a hands-off method for individuals to observe the life of eagles, which would normally remain unseen. Crossword Puzzle Theme Synopsis

  • KEEP TO YOUR PATH (19A: "Stay out of it")
  • ELEVATION LINES (31A: Curves on a topographic map)
  • FOUR-LEAF CLOVER (48A: Fortunate shamrock)

The acronym URL, which stands for a website link, appears fragmented within each themed response, spanning two words: STAY IN YOUR LOCATION. UR L ANE, CONTO UR L INE, and FO UR-L EAF CLOVER.

Based on the riddle’s caption, I deduced that the term LINK might be INTERRUPTED by every solution within the puzzle. This particular style of design frequently appears in such challenges. USA Today Puzzles, this seemed like a logical assumption. Once I inserted STAY IN YOUR LANE, I realized I was heading in the wrong direction. My brilliant “Eureka!” moment came upon finding BROKEN UR/L within every thematic response. Kudos to Jesse Guzman for crafting this challenge. USA Today Crossword launch! Thanks, Jesse, for this charming puzzle.
