MSNBC host Rachel Maddow gleefully mocked President Donald Trump amid a series of crushing poll numbers, and indicated that his growing desperation may lead him to take "reckless" actions.

On Friday night’s edition of MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show , the host began the segment by presenting shocking polling figures and connected these statistics to the arrest of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan :

Therefore, correlation does not imply causation. Simply because events occur simultaneously doesn't automatically mean that one event triggered the other. Nevertheless, it can be challenging to avoid assuming that current news stories might be interconnected for some reason.

Firstly, let's talk about public opinion. Our discussion began yesterday evening by examining how people view this particular president and their administration as they approach the conclusion of these critical initial 100 days in office. As mentioned during last night’s broadcast, the figures paint an extremely unfavorable picture for them.

According to the Pew Poll, President Donald Trump has an overall approval rating that is below water by 19 percentage points. In the Fox News survey, respondents indicated that Trump’s policies are negatively impacting the U.S. economy by a margin of 22 points when compared to their positive effects. Additionally, The Economist/YouGov poll queried participants about whether Trump is predominantly benefiting or adversely affecting both the nation’s economy and the entire country as a whole.

Since Donald Trump returned to the White House, have his presidential actions benefited or harmed the United States? According to the American public, Trump has caused harm, with this sentiment expressed by a 24-point majority. We touched upon this topic yesterday.

Today, "The New York Times" features a prominent headline throughout the day stating, quoted: voters have grown disillusioned with Trump according to a fresh "New York Times"/Sienna survey. The complete headline elaborates, indicating that voters view Trump’s exercise of authority as excessive. It proceeds to list various actions taken by Trump which appear to be widely unpopular among Americans.

Are you against or in favor of Trump cutting funding for colleges? The opposition exceeds the support by 25 percentage points.

Should Trump be allowed to impose tariffs without authorization from Congress? No by a 33-point margin.

Should Trump be allowed to eliminate programs enacted by Congress? No by a 33-point margin.

Should Trump be permitted to expel lawfully residing immigrants due to their protests against Israel? No, with a difference of 46 percentage points.

Should Trump be permitted to send American citizens to that detention facility in El Salvador as he has threatened? No, he shouldn’t be allowed to do so by a majority of 63 points.

Should Trump be permitted to disregard a directive from the United States Supreme Court? No, with a gap of 70 percentage points.

If you're seeing your poll questions get defeated by margins of 40, 60, or even 70 points when asking about things you've mentioned wanting to pursue or currently working on, then we're nearing a nationwide agreement. In this nation, most people seem to be saying "no" to what Donald Trump is proposing.

Are you satisfied with Trump's handling of the government? No.

Are you satisfied with Trump's approach to trade policy? Not at all.

Are you okay with Donald Trump's executive orders reversing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the federal government? Not at all.

Are you supportive of Donald Trump regarding his handling of the economy? No.

No, I do not agree with how Donald Trump has addressed the situation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Are you satisfied with how Donald Trump managed immigration issues? No.

Do you agree with how Donald Trump handled the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case? No, by a 21-point margin, they do not.

However, I mean, give credit to "The New York Times" and their editorial team for accurately capturing the main point of this survey in all its intricacies. The primary message, which they highlighted in the headline, is that voters view Trump’s exercise of power as excessive. They could confidently convey this in the poll since they specifically questioned respondents on this aspect.

I'm talking about clear majorities across the nation who believe that Trump has crossed the line—on tariffs, he’s gone too far; with his reductions in the federal workforce, he’s gone too far; regarding enhanced immigration enforcement, he’s gone too far; considering his broader alterations to the political and economic framework, he’s gone too far.

A clear majority of the nation believes he has exceeded acceptable limits regarding these issues, and this isn’t solely based on the "New York Times"/Sienna poll released today. Additionally, a fresh "AP" nationwide survey published today shows Trump trailing by 24 points on economic matters, quite astonishing.

A fresh "Washington Post"/ABC/Ipsos survey has just been released today. The main takeaway from their report: Trump’s stance on immigration now garners negative feedback. Up until recently, he could rely on public support for his harsh comments regarding immigrants; this is no longer the case. Immigration is no longer an area where he consistently enjoys high approval ratings as he once did.

So, essentially, everything related to Trump is turning out negatively as the public clearly rejects his actions, including those he takes purely for political gain. This ends up having the exact opposite impact from what he intended politically.

I'm not sure we've ever witnessed a presidency's initial 100 days so widely dismissed and despised by Americans. As I mentioned before, correlation does not imply causation; just because two events occur simultaneously doesn't mean one causes the other.

However, when we have "The New York Times" front-page story about the day we're referring to, voters turn against Trump. At this moment, Americans believe Trump is abusing his authority. On the very same day that features news centered around Donald Trump, what action does he take? He has a judge arrested. He has a judge detained.
