MSNBC host Rachel Maddow gleefully mocked President Donald Trump amid a series of crushing polling figures, and indicated that his unease may be causing him to act "recklessly."

On Friday night’s edition of MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show , the host began the segment by presenting shocking polling figures and connected these statistics to the arrest of Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan :

Therefore, correlation does not imply causation. Simply because events occur simultaneously doesn’t automatically mean that one event triggered the other. Nevertheless, it can be challenging to avoid assuming that current news stories may be interconnected for some reason.

First off, let's talk about public opinion. Our discussion began yesterday evening by examining how people view this particular president and their administration as they near the conclusion of these critical initial 100 days in power. As mentioned during our segment last night, the approval ratings aren’t looking good for them.

According to the Pew Poll, President Donald Trump has an overall approval rating that is below water by 19 percentage points. In the Fox News survey, respondents indicated that Trump’s policies are negatively impacting the U.S. economy by a margin of 22 points when compared beneficially. Additionally, The Economist/YouGov poll questioned participants about whether Trump is predominantly benefiting or harming the entire nation, including the economy.

Since Donald Trump returned to the White House, have his presidential actions benefited or harmed the United States? According to the public, Trump has negatively impacted the country, with this sentiment expressed by a margin of 24 percentage points. We touched upon this topic yesterday.

Today, "The New York Times" features a prominent headline throughout the day stating that according to a new "New York Times"/Sienna poll, voters have become disenchanted with Trump. The complete headline elaborates, noting that citizens view Trump's exercise of authority as excessive. It goes on to list various actions taken by Trump and expresses how much the general populace dislikes everything he does.

Are you against or in favor of Trump cutting funding for universities? The opposition outweighs the support by 25 percentage points.

Should Trump have been permitted to implement tariffs without congressional approval? No, by a margin of 33 points.

Should Trump be permitted to abolish programs established by Congress? No, by a 33-point majority.

Should Trump be permitted to remove legal immigrants for demonstrating against Israel? No, with a difference of 46 percentage points.

Should Trump be allowed to send U.S. citizens to that prison in El Salvador like he’s been threatening to? No, he should not be allowed to do that by a 63-point margin.

Should Trump be allowed to ignore an order from the United States Supreme Court ? No, by a 70-point margin.

Whenever you're trailing polls regarding things you've mentioned wanting to undertake or initiatives you're working on, and these poll deficits stretch from 40 to 60, even up to 70 points, it suggests an almost unanimous national opinion against your actions. In this nation, people clearly oppose what Donald Trump is doing.

Are you satisfied with Trump's handling of the government? No.

Are you satisfied with Trump's handling of trade issues? Not at all.

Do you agree with Donald Trump's executive orders aimed at reversing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives within the federal government? Not at all.

Are you in favor of Donald Trump regarding his handling of the economy? No.

No, I do not agree with how Donald Trump has handled the situation regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Do you agree with how Donald Trump managed immigration issues? No.

Do you agree with how Donald Trump handled the Kilmer Abrego Garcia case? No, by a 21-point margin, they do not approve.

But — I mean, credit “The New York Times” and their editors for actually I think really getting right the big takeaway from this poll in all of its detail, the big takeaway really is what they put in the headline, voters see Trump’s use of power as overreaching. And they can say that credibly in this poll because they asked about it.

I mean, outright majorities of the country say that Trump has gone quote too far — on tariffs, too far. On his cuts to the federal workforce, too far. On immigration enforcement, too far. On his overall changes to the political and economic system, too far.

Outright majorities of the country say he’s gone too far on all of those things, and it’s not just that “New York Times”/Sienna poll that’s out today. There’s also a new “AP” national poll that’s out today that which puts Trump minus 24 on the economy, whoa.

A fresh "Washington Post"/ABC/Ipsos survey has just been released today. The main takeaway from their report: Trump’s standing on immigration issues has turned unfavorable. In the past, he could rely on public support for his harsh comments regarding immigrants; this is no longer the case. Immigration is now an area where he can’t consistently expect a favorable approval rating as before.

So, essentially, everything is turning out badly for Trump as the public outright rejects every move he makes, including those actions taken purely for political gain. These moves are actually producing the exact opposite result from what he intended politically.

I'm not sure we've witnessed another presidency where the initial 100 days were so widely dismissed and despised by Americans. As I mentioned before, correlation does not imply causation; just because two events occur simultaneously doesn't mean one causes the other.

However, when "The New York Times" features us on their front page regarding this event, voters turn against Trump. People believe he is abusing his authority with excessive power. On the very same day that these events make headlines about Donald Trump, what action does Trump take? He has a judge arrested. He has a judge detained.
