Carroll's Protégé: Raiders Select Riq Woolen Clone in Third Round
The Raiders have decided to tackle their significant requirement at cornerback.
In the 2025 NFL Draft, with their 68th overall pick, the Raiders chose Iowa State's cornerbacks player Darien Porter.
Throughout the draft, Porter drew multiple comparisons to Seattle Seahawks cornerbacks' standout player, Riq Woolen. During Pete Carroll's time as the head coach of the Raiders, Woolen was drafted and eventually blossomed into a Pro Bowl-caliber cornerback. Now, with Porter under his guidance, Carroll sees an opportunity to showcase another one of his successful development projects.
What Porter contributes to the Raiders
After Jack Jones departed following his standout performance as one of the premier cornerbacks for the Raiders last season, a notable gap emerged in the defensive backfield.
Standing at six-foot-four and running a 4.3 40-yard dash, Porter is an athletic marvel. Despite only having limited experience at cornerback, Porter’s ball skills as a wide receiver shine through with his ability to make plays on the ball and understand routes to cut receivers off. Consistency could be an issue, especially if he matches with the top receivers on the opposing team, but the build and skills are there to create a lockdown cornerback.
The pick could cause controversy with Shedeur Sanders still on the board, but Carroll and company must feel that Porter is the right choice.
