5-Year-Old Dorchester Student Fatally Killed in School Bus Crash
Community members and school authorities are mourning the loss of a 5-year-old boy following his tragic passing. hit and fatally struck by a school bus On Monday afternoon in Hyde Park.
According to officials, the boy was struck as he exited the bus after leaving school for home approximately at 2:45 p.m. The incident occurred close to 107 Washington Street, stated Boston Police Officer Mark Marron.
A relative who preferred to remain anonymous told The Boston Globe Other media sources stated that the boy's name was Lens Arthur Joseph. It is said he was accompanied by his 11-year-old cousin when the incident involving the bus occurred.
Nathaniel Thomas, a neighbor, told WCVB He witnessed the result of the accident and attempted to assist Joseph.
I had just arrived at my driveway when I noticed the child lying on the pavement," he stated. "He didn't appear to be well, and his family member was shouting loudly. The bus driver seemed very distressed. So, I instructed the nearby neighbor to contact law enforcement.
Joseph attended UP Academy Dorchester , a charter school serving grades pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade within the Boston Public Schools district, as stated by the Globe .
We are deeply saddened by this heartrending loss," stated Boston Public Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper. "Our sincere sympathies go out to our student’s family, the entire school community, and everyone impacted by this tragic event.
Skipper mentioned that the district will provide support services for students, staff, and families within the community.
"Our hearts are broken for the child's family and the whole school community after this heartbreaking event," stated School Committee Chair Jeri Robinson.
Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox stated to reporters at the location on Monday afternoon that the police are conducting a thorough investigation.

According to Cox, some of the children on the bus were transported to nearby hospitals for evaluation as well. The bus driver, who remained at the location, is completely assisting with the investigation, he further stated.
