Warnings over 'high chance' of Australian cyclone this week

The system, designated 18U, is predicted to reach cyclone strength either late today or tomorrow, says a post from the BoM on X.

A tropical cyclone watch warning is active from Cape Leveque to Wallal Downs, covering Broome on the west of Australia.

Islands located off the coast are part of the warning.

Gales are expected to kick in over the next day to day and a bit to 36 hours ahead.

The Bureau advised the system might reach category three cyclone intensity by late Tuesday or Wednesday.

A flood watch warning has been issued for catchments in the Kimberley in the state's north and the Pilbara region.

"While there's no direct threat at the moment, you need to start getting ready for the potential for bad weather and stay informed," the WA Department of Fire and Emergency Services warned on Facebook early this morning.

Citizens are advised to secure their vehicles, boats, gas bottles and loose outdoor items around their residence.

They should also have a disaster kit set up, with tinned food and water to last for a stint of five to seven days, a first aid pack, medication, some cash and a battery radio with spare batteries to keep an ear out for emergency messages.
