Few things set our current way of life apart from how we lived a decade or two ago more than our shopping habits.

In the early 2000s, for instance, most of us would go to the mall to buy jeans and sneakers. We'd head to the grocery store for our regular grocery shopping. And we'd visit a large warehouse store for things like furniture and electronics.

These days, however, many of us are opting to skip the lines and traffic congestion by ordering most of those goods online.

Companies that have taken on the logistical and financial responsibilities to make online shopping convenient.

Amazon took the lead, as it was one of the first retailers to provide free and expedited shipping and returns as part of an annual membership program.

To this day, more than 200 Prime members have access to millions of items that arrive at their doorsteps within two days, with many orders even arriving on the very same day.

Walmart makes strides

Walmart is closely following behind Amazon.

The largest retailer introduced Walmart+ in 2020, a time when many people were staying home to avoid the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic and decided to order almost everything online instead.

While Walmart remains somewhat tight-lipped about its exact membership numbers, the retailer has made significant efforts to compete with Amazon's massive Prime service.

Walmart+ members get perks such as special discounts, hassle-free returns, and, of course, free and quick shipping.

Walmart's CEO is taking on a major benefit that Amazon offers its employees.

And now, Walmart is accomplishing something that Amazon is aiming to achieve.

During Walmart's Q4 2025 earnings call, management reported that 93% of U.S. households now have access to same-day shipping - a service Amazon has been actively expanding in recent years.

What's more, Walmart has significantly increased its super fast delivery options. Deliveries made in three hours or less have seen a huge jump of 180% in that time period, showing a strong demand for immediate service.

We're enhancing our ability to meet customers' needs as they arise in the moment," Walmart CEO Doug McMillon stated. "That's what's fueling our expansion. Our prices are affordable and we're becoming more accessible.

Thanks to these advancements in convenience, Walmart's membership is growing. The retailer saw its membership income rise by 16% year over year, with net sales increasing by 4%.

Amazon stated in April that 60% of its orders are for same- or next-day delivery, suggesting that consumers prioritize speed and convenience above all else.
