There isn't a lot of information available about what the military's X-37B has been doing in space, but we can now confirm one thing for sure: The view from up there is quite impressive.

A photo taken from the X-37B space plane was posted on the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service. The caption stated that the image was taken from an X-37B onboard camera, which was used to monitor the health and safety of the vehicle. It also captured an image of Earth while the X-37B was conducting experiments in a highly elliptical orbit in 2024.

It shows the picture, but also gives a sense of the quality of the X-37B's cameras, as well as how far it is in orbit.

The exact date and time of the photo are unclear, but it's known to have been taken in 2024. The location of the photo is listed as being in the "Space Force area of responsibility." The X-37B space plane took off on December 28, 2023. While Space Force provides information about the launch dates and the duration of each mission, they don't offer many details about the space plane's activities while in orbit. This photo is one of the clearest views of the X-37B in action. The space plane, which combines elements of a plane and a satellite, is in a highly elliptical orbit, according to information released by Space Force.

The Boeing-made space plane has been conducting orbital tests since 2010. Its previous mission, which ended on November 12, 2022, lasted 908 days, making it the longest X-37B mission. On this current OTV-7 mission, the X-37B is conducting several new tests. One of the key tests conducted in recent months was a groundbreaking aerobraking experiment. Starting in November 2024, the X-37B began using atmospheric friction to adjust its orbit, relying on air resistance instead of fuel to slow down. This technique also allowed it to safely dispose of its payload module by jettisoning it in a controlled manner to prevent space debris.
