Trump Meets Tiger Woods, Golf Execs as PGA Tour-Saudi Deal Looms
Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which supports the emerging league, attended the meeting, according to the White House, along with PGA Tour player director Adam Scott. Trump announced the discussions at a Black History Month reception at the White House, during which he brought Woods on stage.
We had some interesting conversations.
The White House did not comment further on the meeting, which was the second time the president had brought the parties together this month. Monahan and Scott were also in attendance at the event.
“Thanks to the leadership of President Trump, we have initiated a discussion about the reunification of golf,” Monahan, Woods and Scott stated. “We are committed to moving forward as quickly as possible and will provide further details as needed.”
Donald Trump is a passionate golfer who has become deeply involved in bringing together the professional men's golfing world, which has been split since the launch of LIV Golf in 2021. The president also has a personal stake in the business side of things, having long been interested in hosting high-profile golf tournaments featuring the world's top golfers.
The PGA Tour announced a framework agreement with the Saudi PIF in June 2023 with the aim of reunifying the sport, but progress has been slow partly because of a U.S. Department of Justice antitrust review of the proposed agreement.
The PGA Tour said on February 6th after a meeting with Trump two days earlier that the president had "brought us closer" to a final agreement.
"We asked the President to get involved for the benefit of the game, the benefit of the country, and for the benefit of all the countries involved," Monahan, Woods and Scott said in a joint statement.
Properties owned by Trump have hosted several LIV Golf tournaments, including an upcoming event in April at his resort in Florida.
He has been to his Turnberry property in Scotland since he bought it in 2014.
Backed by the Public Investment Fund, an organization al-Rumayyan is also a part of.
