Tom Brady offers advice to Eagles QB Jalen Hurts after MVP Super Bowl display
.
Cruised to a dominant 40-22 win, shutting out the Chiefs from a historic three-in-a-row victory.
completing 17 of 22 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushin' 72 yards and scorin' a try of his own.
The Eagles, led by Nick Sirianni, got the win, which justified payback for their close 38-35 loss to the Chiefs in 2023. Hurts was chuffed to come out on top in this big occasion after last time round the Eagles came up short.
‘I just think back to all the hard yakka, all the effort, all the determination over the years, and then taking that on to this side of the fence and Philly, building something special during my tenure here and Coach [Nick Sirianni’s] tenure here as well,’ Hurts told Fox Sports after the game.
‘It all comes down to the work on the football field. It’s a fair dinkum team effort. I was having a yarn with (Eagles owner) Mr. Lurie and I said defence wins championships. The boys played their hearts out today, and that was evident.’
Asked about how they managed to turn Sunday's match into such a one-sided affair, Hurts added: "I reckon it was a matter of taking it a play at a time."
‘The whole thing was all about concentration, tuning out the background noise, ignoring the wind and staying loyal to what we were really trying to achieve. Earlier this year, we headed out to make this happen and this was the ultimate goal in mind.’
‘Fair dinkum, we did it! I'm still taking it all in. You put in heaps of hard work for this and it's finally happened – you're really keen to have a good think about it.’
Brady, meanwhile, told the game's best player to enjoy his first Super Bowl triumph, but to make sure he headed home with a special keepsake.
‘Give me a bit of time to sort it out,’ the seven-time grand final winner says to Hurts.
‘G'day, you're gonna waken up tomorrow mornin' and feel as right as rain. What I want you to be chuffed about is makin' sure you don't let that guernsey out of your sight.’
‘I've had a few taken from me over the years, so keep an eye out for that. It will certainly be a memorable occasion down the track. I'm as chuffed as can be for you. Congratulations to you and your mob.’
‘You blokes played cracking good all season long. There couldn’t have been a better champion than the Philadelphia Eagles and you led them to victory.’
Reflecting on what was a dismal loss for the Chiefs, Brady said he reckons the way they went down on Sunday will still hurt but he's confident that Andy Reid's team, as well as Mahomes, will be back stronger next season.
‘I reckon I think about, sadly, the three losses more than the seven wins, it cuts me up to lose this game,’ Brady said. ‘That loss to the Giants is 17 years on, I still haven't got over it as much as you care so deeply, I know the Chiefs do as well, and I reckon Patrick feels the same way.’
‘The reality check after a loss in this game is, you don’t ever get over it, you head out in front of a full house, having won the Big One a few times before, but when you're down by 34 points with just six minutes and 50 seconds on the clock, fair dinkum, you have to go out there in those final six minutes and give it a fair crack at it.
‘The tricky thing in the NFL and three-peating, every year you start from scratch, they give you a championship banner and a ring, then you’re right back at the bottom again. They’re clearly a fantastic football dynasty, they’re an amazing team, they'll have to rebuild as quickly as possible.’
‘Return to the drawing board, there's no two ways about it. It's the absolute peak and the absolute crush when you're trying to win and achieve something truly historic in the gridiron.
‘I recall goin’ down to the Giants in 2007, hop on the bus after the game, fair dinkum, it was just gut-wrenching, couldn’t string any words together the rest of the night. I just always remember wakin' up next mornin', thought it was all just a bad dream, that game hadn't even gone down? It's a bloody tough feeling to deal with, but if anyone can shake it off, it's Patrick Mahomes.’
