In 1940, people first began to suspect that there was more to the Great Pyramid's outer layer than initially appeared.

British Egyptologist Flinders Petrie examined a collection of publications about Ancient Egypt and observed a void line running down the middle of each side of the Great Pyramid when viewing them from above and with the correct lighting conditions.

And he wasn't the only one to pick up on it.

IES Edwards wrote: "In the Great Pyramid, the packing blocks were arranged so that they slanted slightly inwards towards the centre of each row, which resulted in a noticeable dip running down the middle of each face; a characteristic shared, as far as is known, by no other pyramid."

journal.

Dr Akio Kato, a university researcher, agreed with Petrie and Edwards.

"Giza's Great Pyramid has a unique concave feature, where each of its four sides has a slight inward curve, from the base to the summit," Kato said.

In other words, the Great Pyramid is a curved octagonal pyramid, rather than a standard square pyramid. This curvature is so slight that it can't be seen from the ground, but can be noticed from the air.
