Social Security to increase monthly benefits for millions
This Tuesday, retroactive benefits will start being paid, and monthly payments for millions of former public workers will be increased.
This will apply to individuals whose benefits have been impacted by the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset.
Over 3.2 million Social Security recipients will soon experience an increase in their benefits, including individuals who received pensions from their previous careers as teachers, firefighters, police officers, and other public service employees.
Most people can expect to receive their one-time retroactive payment by the end of March, with new monthly payments starting in April, as per the agency's plan.
We want to get benefits to people as fast as we can," said Lee Dudek, acting commissioner of Social Security. "Our initial estimate that it would take a year or more will only apply to the most complicated cases that can't be handled automatically. The American people deserve to receive their rightful benefits as quickly as possible.
WEP and GPO originally limited Social Security benefits for recipients if they received retirement payments from other sources, such as public retirement programs from a state or local government.
The Social Security Administration advises beneficiaries to wait until April to inquire about the status of their retroactive payment since these payments will be processed gradually in March.
What are the potential long-term effects on Social Security?
Advocates claim the Social Security Fairness Act corrects a long-standing unfairness, but it will also put additional pressure on the Social Security Trust Funds, which are already facing a looming financial crisis.
Funds will run out sooner than expected. It's predicted that the money will be depleted by 2035, but some lawmakers believe the Fairness Act would make that happen even sooner.
“Americans who have worked hard their whole lives to earn an honest living should be able to retire with economic security and dignity, which is the fundamental purpose of the Social Security system,” former President Joe Biden said at a White House signing ceremony in January. “This is a significant achievement.”
Social Security's future has become a major topic of debate in politics and was a central issue in the 2024 election. Approximately 72.5 million individuals, including retirees, those who are disabled, and children, rely on Social Security benefits.
