Slay, queen: Sarah Michelle Gellar confirms ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ revival is happening

"G'day, what's the plan now?" said Dawn in the last scene of the show.

We're heading back to ruined Sunnydale, that's what we're going to do!

Fair dinkum, over two decades after the ripper of a supernatural series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, made by the legend Joss Whedon, wrapped up its seven-season stint (1997-2003), it's off on again, with reports out now that a new version is being looked at by Hulu for a crack at making a pilot.

And before the fans start sharpening up their vampire-stabbing stakes and yelling out for the underworld gate to unleash its worst, Sarah Michelle Gellar, 47, is expected to again play Buffy Summers in the remake.

Variety reported that Gellar was in "final talks" to play the iconic character, although she wouldn't be the one leading the new series, which would instead feature a new soprano.

The project is a go, and Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao - a confessed Buffy enthusiast - has been tapped to helm the next instalment in the Buffy franchise.

Gellar has posted a message on Instagram confirming her involvement.

G'day... you might've seen some news this week, but I reckon you haven't heard from me," she began. "Three years ago, I got a call from my good mate and mentor, Gail Berman. She said she wanted me to have a yarn with Chloé Zhao about a potential Buffy reunion. I was gobsmacked that Chloé even knew who I was, but, like I've always done, I told Gail that I just couldn't see a way for the show to come back. We'd always been on the same page about that, but this time I caught a different vibe in her voice. I eventually agreed to meet up (mainly just to meet Chloé) and our twenty-minute coffee turned into a four-hour chin-wag. We laughed, we had a good cry, but mostly we both chatted about how much this show means to us.

She said she was "stunned" when she agreed to keep going, and it wasn't till "eventually, one day, we came up with an idea".

“I've always listened to the fans and heard your desire to revisit Buffy and her world, but it was only something I could consider if I was certain we could do it justice,” Gellar said. “It's been a lengthy process, and it's not over yet. I assure you, we won't bring this show back unless we're confident we can get it right. And I can tell you that we're heading in the right direction.”

We have faith.

It's pretty obvious that Whedon isn't involved in the reboot, given he hasn't worked in Hollywood since facing allegations of misconduct back in 2021.

So, all we can do now is hope that Alyson Hannigan and Anthony Stewart Head are keen to pop back up, as the show wouldn't be the same without Willow and Giles.

"G'day mate, every mob's gotta have their special legend," she said. Fair dinkum, we're buzzing to meet the new bloke who's been chosen for the job, and he's been mentoring under one of the best, Buffy.
