Fair dinkum, Matt Burke can finally chuck the autocue.

And the good thing about commentating and being on a panel is you can give your opinion, fair dinkum?

My old gig was just reading the news, that's all I did. And you can't just make up the news, you know what I'm getting at? So, I'm really looking forward to sharing my thoughts on Stan. It's the footy game I love and there's heaps of ripper talking points in rugby at the moment.

Views can be pretty divisive at times, but I've got the expertise and the enthusiasm and I'm really keen to get underway.

Australia's rugby scene is having a ripper of a year, with Super Rugby Pacific getting underway this Friday in Sydney.

.

"My goal is to connect with every Aussie who loves footy and not just get stuck in the 'back in my day' mentality," Burke explains.

G'day, the game's changed and blokes like Morgs (Turinui) and 'Goog' (Justin Harrison) are doin' a top job of breakin' it down while still havin' a ripper of a time. The basics are the same and I reckon I can give some insight into what it's like to perform under a fair dinkum amount of pressure.

Everyone can see if someone drops the ball. But what's the reason they dropped it? Were they running at the wrong angle, were their shoulders in the wrong position or was the pass just too tricky?

That's the expertise I can bring to the team.

Burke, who scored 878 points in 81 Tests and won the 1999 World Cup, finished his previous role on 13 December.

G'day, Dad, you know you're not on the air no more?

I said: 'Fair dinkum.' She said: 'You reckon we could shave your head?' I said: 'Let's give it a go.'

And then me wife walked out and lost the plot! I needed heaps of sunscreen over Christmas, mate.

I'm not aware of any text you'd like me to paraphrase. Please provide the text you'd like me to paraphrase.

I've had the chance to captain some of these blokes! Tim Horan's still rocking the same hairstyle he's had for 35 years. He's still fit and keen to compete and that enthusiasm shines through in all his media work as well. Morgs is still as big as he was when he was playing footy and 'Goog' is still the same height.

But take a look around the team and what they've achieved on the field - fair dinkum. They know how to talk themselves up in the big moments.

Fair dinkum, people still remember Justin's lineout steal in the Lions series and T Horan bouncing off blokes in the World Cup final.

History's got a big part to play in getting people passionate about rugby and motivating the next generation. I really rate how the Stan team can break down the game, which can be pretty complex, without talking down to the viewers.

For Sean (Maloney), he's the embodiment of enthusiasm. It's going to be a real ripper of a time.

How Burke Sees the Current State of Rugby...

It's been a real thrill to see Joseph Suaalii join the team and I've had the chance to get to know him through my connections with the Waratahs and he's a top bloke.

He's 21 but he's got an incredibly mature head on his shoulders. What he was able to achieve on Test debut against the Poms was just bloody fantastic. There was heaps of pressure on him to perform but he just went with the flow. Got some early touches, built up some confidence and then did some top-notch stuff in the air.

The Spring Tour, two out of four - I reckon that's a pass, just, but a poor performance against Scotland let us down.

There are definitely some indications of encouragement and growth.

"I'm not sure what position Suaalii should play...

G'day, I'd like to see him at 13. Big frame, get him in the front row. Makes it easier to get a hand on the ball, easier to make a tackle.

Get in on the action early and calm your nerves. He was picked to play at fullback in the trial game, but you can also try playing at five-eighth.

He's got a lot of options to consider when deciding whether to run or kick, and at 13, he can just let his instincts take over.

He looked pretty good there on the Spring Tour, especially with how they used him up against England. Take the game to the opposition.

In fullback positions, teams can tactically take him out of the game by booting the ball to the corners. That's happened a bit with Izzy Folau at times. Regardless of the position, he'll still have a huge impact.

Fair dinkum, the Super Rugby Pacific season's as hot as a barbie on a summer's day, mate!

Gutted the Rebels have gone under, but that's given the other Aussie teams a boost. The Waratahs are looking pretty good, especially with Taniela Tupou, Andrew Kellaway, and Rob Leota on their side.

"Queensland took on a couple and are building under Les Kiss, the Brumbies are still going strong under Bernie (Larkham).

I reckon the Force will be pretty competitive, even against the Kiwi teams. It's still an incredibly tough competition.

MATE, BURKE ON THE BEST FULLBACK OF HIS GENERATION...

Christian Cullen was bloody good. He had absolute jets. Incredibly strong, five foot ten but incredibly powerful and could change direction without winding down.

It seemed he wasn't going well at all, but he kept putting himself in positions where he could still finish.

His support lines, running at full tilt, blokes like Eroni Clarke, you'd think you've got a crack at him and he'd just blow past you.

G'day, with Jonah Lomu out there, they had a pretty good time of it. He was a real tough bugger to play against. I also loved Serge Blanco and Roger Gould - they were two of me all-time heroes.

Burke on whether he or Cullen was better...

G'day, Matt Burke, I booted goals! He scored tries and I booted goals. One of me favourite memories was playing for the Barbarians with Cully, (Brian) O'Driscoll, (Carlos) Spencer and (Chris) Latham.

The collective skills were just top-notch. I also have great memories of Jonah inviting me to join him in his comeback match at Twickenham. I was the only Aussie there and it was great to see how much fun the Kiwis had playing the game.

I recall throwing the ball to Jonah in space and he was sprinting straight at my Newcastle teammate Mathew Tait.

Matt's eyes were popping out of his head and I recall thinking, 'Did I look that frightened when Jonah was charging at me?'

I've had the opportunity to play alongside some of the game's all-time greats. I've been very fortunate.
