Primary school geography presents a spot-on picture of the world.

It tells us, for instance, that there are seven continents on Earth, but in reality, it's a lot more complicated than that.

Earth’s crust.

This led to the creation of a thick continental crust over the ocean, which has now been recognised as a newly discovered primitive microcontinent.

A team of scientists from the UK and Sweden rebuilt the tectonic plate movements that would've taken place in the region surrounding the Davis Strait about 33 to 61 million years back.

There's recently been a naming ceremony and they've dubbed it the Davis Strait proto-microcontinent.

According to the experts, researching this new landmass and how it was created will aid in gaining a greater understanding of similar geographic formations.

“Our identified system of microcontinent formation may be relevant to other microcontinents worldwide,” the team said in their paper.

“Further research is warranted to comprehend the influence of plate movement changes and transpression on the detachment of microcontinents.”
