Scientists have just discovered a brand new continent
Primary school geography paints a tidy picture of the world.
It lets us know, for instance, that there are seven continents on Earth, but the reality is much more complicated.

Earth’s crust.
This led to the formation of a thick continental crust in the ocean, which has now been classified as a newly discovered primitive microcontinent.
A team of scientists based in the UK and Sweden re-created the plate tectonic movements that would have occurred in the region around the Davis Strait between 33 and 61 million years ago.
notes.
It's now been dubbed the Davis Strait proto-microcontinent.
According to the experts, investigating this new landmass and its origins will enhance our overall understanding of similar geographic formations.
“Our identified mechanism of microcontinent formation may be widely applicable to other microcontinents worldwide,” the team wrote in their paper.
“Further research is warranted to grasp the significance of plate movement changes and transpression in the process of microcontinent fragmentation.”
