A Russian Telegram channel called Mayorsky KortiZol posted a video on 5 February in which a Russian soldier claimed he was given a donkey.

“Fair dinkum, they've given us a donkey. It's stuck in the support mob. We've got a bit of a mess with transport, mate. Here's the donkey. Use it to cart ammo to the front lines,” he said.

Another Russian serviceman claimed that his unit had received four donkeys and made a wisecrack about using the animals in the 21st century.

“Fair dinkum, they're bringing us donkeys – the real deal! Four of 'em. I've no idea how they'll split 'em up... They're using donkeys to cart ammo. The orders are to set up a corral for 'em. Twenty-first century and we're going to war with donkeys.”

The losses of armoured military vehicles – tanks, infantry fighting vehicles and armoured personnel carriers – totalled 11,597 units, claims Oryx, a Dutch research group that monitors the Ukraine conflict. Of these, 8,720 were completely destroyed, 367 were damaged, 975 were left behind, and 1,535 were taken over.

Viktor Sobolev, a retired general who is now on the Russian parliament's defence committee, has defended the use of the animals.

.

“If methods like donkeys, horses, and the like are used to transport ammunition and other supplies to the front line, this is standard practice.”

"It's fair dinkum, it's better for a donkey to be put out of its misery than two people having to go to the trouble of transporting goods in a vehicle," he said.

He remembered that during World War II, a lot of the artillery was being pulled by horses back then.

“Dogs were also used in that conflict, he said. They were fitted with explosives and sent to areas where they were required.”

One pro-war Russian Telegram channel asked what would happen if the horses were taken by the Ukrainian army.

“Will it be declared a missing in action or a prisoner of war?” asked the Dva Maiora [Two Majors] channel.
