Queensland's 50-cent public transport fares made permanent

The government has confirmed that the 50c fares for public transport will stick from now on.

A trial of cheap fares was originally introduced by Labor before the state election, then supported by the Coalition.

The six-month trial finished yesterday, but the Crisafulli government has committed $1.5 billion to keep the scheme on the books.

Since the discount was introduced back in August, public transport use has gone up 18 per cent compared to the same time in last year.

Savings of $180 million have been accumulated over a period of six months.

For a commuter travelled from Caboolture to Brisbane City, a daily bus fare would cost around twenty bucks or almost two and a half grand over six months.

Under the 50c fare scheme, that same trip costs 133 big ones - a difference of over two thousand bucks.

Over 93 million journeys have been undertaken since last August with notable increases in all areas of service.

While this policy comes at a sizeable expense to the budget, it's a winner for passengers and their hip pockets.
