OpenAI's 'cost-effective' new AI model is here as pressure from DeepSeek heats up
- OpenAI launched o3-mini, a cost-effective reasoning AI model, on Friday.
- The announcement is significant, given the disruptions caused by DeepSeek's R1 model in the tech sector.
- OpenAI stated that the o3-mini excels in science, mathematics, and computer programming.
OpenAI's initial small reasoning model has been released, just several weeks following a notable development by a Chinese AI startup that gives them a rival challenge to their artificial intelligence offerings.
The creator of ChatGPT released OpenAI o3-mini, their "most cost-efficient model" in their reasoning series, on Friday. The model was first previewed in December, but the actual release occurred in the same week that the open-source R1 model from DeepSeek disrupted the Big Tech industry.
The company's technological models.
We are aware that some groups in China are actively working on replicating advanced US AI models, using techniques such as distillation, a spokesperson from OpenAI previously stated to Business Insider.
Questions have been raised about the affordability and efficiency of R1 during their earnings calls.
The company is reportedly set to secure a new round of funding, potentially worth $300 billion.
Similar to R1, the o3-mini is designed to handle complex queries, and OpenAI notes that it has a strong proficiency in science, mathematics, and coding. Developers can set the level of reasoning to low, medium, or high, depending on the complexity of the challenge.
ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro users will have access to o3-mini starting this Friday, and free plan users will be able to try it out by selecting the "Reason" option.
on Microsoft Start.
