NBA Eastern Conference Power Rankings Heading Into All-Star Break
The season is nearing its midway point, and teams are now positioning themselves for the playoffs.
ranked the Western Conference entering the break.
NBA Western Conference Power Rankings at the All-Star Break
15. Washington Wizards
The Washington team made several roster changes, acquiring both Khris Middleton and Marcus Smart. Although the veteran players may help the team win some games towards the end of the season, these moves were primarily aimed at improving the team's future prospects.
14. Charlotte Hornets
After a hectic trade deadline, Charlotte still has the rest of the season to look forward to. Their main focus now is on the continued growth of this young team, as making the playoffs seems unlikely.
13. Brooklyn Nets
Draft. They still have Cam Johnson, but the Nets appear to be a team that will decline in performance as the year progresses.
12. Toronto Raptors
The addition of Brandon Ingram will likely benefit the Raptors, and with him on the roster, they now have a proven All-Star. Pairing him with Scottie Barnes could be intriguing, and Toronto may look to make a strong push towards the playoffs later in the season.
11. Chicago Bulls
Does anyone grasp the direction the Bulls are heading? Despite trading away star Zach LaVine, Chicago still doesn't seem to be fully in rebuilding mode, which is puzzling to the dedicated fan base.
10. Philadelphia 76ers
Philadelphia has had a disastrous season plagued by injuries. However, if this team were to get back to full health, they could potentially become a force to be reckoned with in the playoffs.
Making it to the playoffs will be the bigger challenge for the 76ers.
9. Atlanta Hawks
Atlanta still has star point guard Trae Young, but he can only do so much on his own. The team made trades at the deadline that sent away some key players and didn't acquire much talent for this season.
This could be the last year for Young with the Hawks, and it appears Atlanta is still struggling to move out of the middle of the pack.
8. Miami Heat
After trading Jimmy Butler, the Heat now have a clear path forward for the rest of the season. With forward Andrew Wiggins on board, they can still be strong contenders, particularly with center Bam Adebayo.
Miami will be a tough team as usual, but their chances of winning the championship are still up in the air for this season.
7. Detroit Pistons
The Pistons' success this season has been one of the most notable storylines of the year. After years of consistently finishing near the bottom of the conference, Detroit has shown significant improvement.
Guard Cade Cunningham has been electrifying and has this team abuzz. Although the Pistons aren't likely to be title contenders, the playoffs are well within their reach this year.
6. Orlando Magic
The Orlando team's performance has declined, mainly due to some lackluster play, but they are still an intriguing team. Following a strong showing in the playoffs last year, the Magic made a significant investment in this team by signing veteran Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
Even with their current slump, the Magic are a team that no one will want to face come playoff time. This team may be lower in the standings than Detroit, but they have been through more challenges than the Pistons at this point.
5. Indiana Pacers
The Pacers made it to the Eastern Conference Finals last year, but they're not being taken seriously as legitimate contenders. Many still view them as a team that deals with a lot of injuries, so Indiana is looking to prove everyone wrong.
This team can be high-flying, but they also have a tendency to be inconsistent. For the Pacers to silence their critics, achieving success in the playoffs again would be a big step in the right direction.
4. Milwaukee Bucks
Milwaukee will have to rely on good health, just like every other team, but they've struggled to stay healthy during the playoffs in recent years. Last season, injuries to Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard hurt their chances, causing them to lose in the first round.
But if this team is healthy, they could be a formidable opponent in the Eastern Conference playoffs. With the addition of forward Kyle Kuzma, the Bucks now have a significant boost to their roster firepower.
3. New York Knicks
And it's making them look like a serious contender. But for the Knicks, they'll need to prove they can take down the other top teams in the East.
This team is stacked from top to bottom, but the playoffs will ultimately decide the fate of this proud franchise.
2. Cleveland Cavaliers
Cleveland is having a season to remember, but unless they make a strong showing in the postseason, it may not be enough to capture the attention of fans. Many people are drawing comparisons between the Cavaliers and the 2014-2015 Atlanta Hawks, who also had a strong regular season but ultimately fell short of expectations, and the Cavaliers are looking to prove that they are more than just a similar story.
This team has a strong lineup and the inclusion of De'Andre Hunter should be a boost, but it's the playoffs that really matter in Cleveland and we'll have to see if they can succeed.
1. Boston Celtics
Boston's East division record may not be the best this season, but nobody is counting them out for the playoffs. When this team is at full strength, they're clearly the top contender to win the conference title.
The Celtics have won two out of three games against the Cavaliers this season, with Cleveland's only victory coming when Jaylen Brown was sidelined. The Celtics will remain a dominant force in the Eastern Conference until they're finally defeated.
