CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Daytona 500 pole-winner Chase Briscoe suffered a major penalty when NASCAR announced that Joe Gibbs Racing had installed a modified spoiler on the No. 19 Toyota during qualifying.

Joe Gibbs Racing suffered a penalty of 100 driver/owner points and 10 playoff points. The issue was related to a non-modifiable, single-source part found during NASCAR's inspection process, specifically the spoiler base.

JGR also was fined $100,000 and crew chief James Small was suspended for four races. Briscoe now heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway with a deficit of 67 points in the standings. He fell from 10th place in the standings to 39th.

Joe Gibbs Racing stated that they would be appealing, and "the problem in question was caused during assembly when the bolts used to attach the spoiler base to the deck lid wore down the pre-drilled holes due to interference from the provided parts."

Joey Logano was discovered to have an ineligible glove during his qualifying run in 2024.

The Briscoe penalty sets off his season with a disappointing start while driving for Gibbs. The earliest he can get back into positive points is at the third race of the season, which will be held at the Circuit of the Americas.

In other penalties announced on Wednesday, the No. 34 Front Row Motorsports team of Todd Gilliland and the No. 51 Rick Ware Racing team of Cody Ware were penalized for a safety infraction involving added ballast to their vehicles. Gilliland and Ware were each fined 10 driver points and their teams lost 10 owner points.
