NASA discovers planet eight times bigger than Earth

NASA has been keeping an eye on a new planet in our own solar system, which is eight times bigger than our own Earth.

The exoplanet, GJ 1214 b, was first detected by the Hubble Telescope back in 2009. Thanks to the James Webb Telescope, scientists have now got some further insights into its composition.

GJ 1214b has been classified as a subgroup-Nupiter due to its measurement—a term used for planets smaller than Jupiter but larger than Earth.

This sort of planet, with its distinct make-up, is only discovered outside our solar system.

"GJ 1214b has been the one that's had everyone in the exoplanet community chasing the problem for ages. It's great to finally uncover some of its secrets," says Laura Kreidberg, director at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg, Germany.
