Surfers off Hawaii's Kohala Coast had a rare close call with a great white shark on Thursday when it swam directly overhead and briefly checked out their boat.

Jessica Glazner, a marine biologist, posted to Instagram, saying, “8,000-plus hours spent underwater led to this moment.”

Glazner also asked followers to estimate the shark's size, considering the dive boat was 35 feet long and 10 feet wide.

Sightings of great white sharks are uncommon in Hawaii, but adult great whites from California and Mexico have been known to migrate seasonally as far west as Hawaii.

A large shark, nicknamed Tough Guy, identified as a 12-foot mature shark in Southern California in 2021, has not been tracked to any other location since last week.

The property was owned and operated by Glazner, who referred to the encounter as a "once-in-a-lifetime moment."

The captain of the Moonshine vessel was blasting "death metal" music at the time.
