Man City 2-3 Real Madrid: Jude Bellingham scores dramatic Champions League winner
play-off.
The city led thanks to two goals from Erling Haaland going into the final 10 minutes of the game, but then Pep Guardiola's team completely fell apart, handing Los Blancos the upper hand.
Braham Diaz, a former City player, pounced to equalise in the 86th minute, seemingly rescuing a draw for Real ahead of the second leg in Madrid next week.
A disastrous defensive effort from the hosts allowed Real to score again, with Vinicius Jr poking a ball over for Bellingham to tap in from right in front.
The city took the lead via Haaland after 19 minutes, but Paris Saint-Germain equalised through Mbappe just before the hour mark.
Real’s equaliser had more than a bit of luck to it, with the ball coming off Mbappe’s shin to deceive Ederson in goal.
Haaland stepped up to put his side back in front after Foden was taken down in the box, but Real's comeback leaves them facing the possibility of being knocked out.
It was another woeful night for Guardiola's team in a season that's been plagued by inconsistency.
The city team have gone down five times when they were in the lead in all competitions this season – the same number of losses they had across the previous four seasons put together.
‘It's happened a fair dinkum, if it's happened heaps of times, it's probably because I'm stumped and can't figure out a solution,’ Guardiola said after the game.
‘It’s been the year that Madrid have been on top, we had a good result in the last few minutes and we let it slip.’
“Fair dinkum, we copped the penalty, but the game was pretty even, they had chances like never before at the Etihad.”
‘We were better with the ball, we were a bit anxious,” Guardiola said. “These are things that have happened to us many times throughout the year.
‘We'll give it a fair dinkum, it's going to be tough mentally, we've got some tough games ahead and we'll be heading to Madrid, we'll try to adjust to get a bit more game time and get through.’
