Lynx captured after illegal release in Cairngorms ‘doing well’, say experts
.
The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, the charity that operates the zoo, trapped the cats in early January after they were spotted in the Drumguish area near Kingussie.
It has been confirmed that all three lynxes are female and are thought to be under a year old.
The lynx are in good health and are recovering well in our quarantine facilities at Edinburgh Zoo.
A fourth lynx died overnight, following its capture in January. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland has confirmed that the lynx was a male, estimated to be the same age as the females.
The surviving animals have been temporarily given names A, B and C, a tradition started by the charity's founder, Thomas Gillespie, when Edinburgh Zoo first opened in 1913.
RZSS chief executive David Field said: "Releasing these cats into the wild without permission was extremely thoughtless and it was highly probable that they would have perished had they not been rescued."
“Fortunately, the lynxes are in good health and are recovering well in our quarantine facilities at Edinburgh Zoo.”
Our team of expert carers and vets have been thrilled to see how well they've taken to their new surroundings and have been closely observing as all three continue to grow in confidence and start to show their individual characters.
“Now that they have finished their quarantine, the next challenge is to find their forever home.”
“They will remain here for the time being while we weigh up our options. All this comes at a significant cost, so we have launched an appeal for donations and have been heartened by the generous response we've received so far.”
