Kelsea Ballerini Defends Beyoncé's Country Grammy Nominations: "You Don't Have To Be a Country Artist To Make a Country Record"

Country music star Kelsea Ballerini doesn't quite get why people would object to artists like Beyoncé and Post Malone being nominated in country music categories.

On Friday about the upcoming awards, show host Lori Majewski asked the Tennessee native what she thinks about artists like Beyoncé, Post Malone, and Kacey Musgraves, who experiment with various genres, being nominated against "hardcore country" performers like Chris Stapleton and Lainey Wilson.

To me, that category represents what country music has been this year, and that's what the album of the year category should reflect. What has made country music innovative and successful this year. I'm not really clear on other opinions, other than it's great to have well-known and respected artists from other genres come and celebrate our music. I don't see why that would be anything but excellent.

Maren Ballerini expressed her confusion as to why country artists are free to explore pop music, but not the reverse. "You don't need to be a country singer to make a country record," she noted. "There's no rule that says these styles can't coexist."

Kelsea Ballerini says she asked actor Chase Stokes to be her date to the Grammys. She was nominated for her song "Cowboys Cry Too" with folk-pop artist Noah Kahan. "It just so happens that we're all friends, he [Kahan] and his fiancé, and Chase and I," she said. "They live very close to us and we go over and we hang out." Ballerini mentioned at the Country Music Awards that the four of them would have a double date on Sunday at the Grammys.

We're going to take some photos, then head inside and enjoy some wine while watching live performances - it's going to be an amazing date night," she said. "It's a special night, really, because it's a date night for the two of us, and also a double date night with you and Noah, and we're also celebrating a song I'm really proud of, with an artist I admire so much.

Ballerini sang Kahan's praises. "I just can't say enough. Every collaboration I've had has taught me something new and different, and some have been more enjoyable than others," she said. "But Noah is just a wonderful person and an incredibly talented songwriter."

As a five-time Grammy nominee without having earned the award, Ballerini thought about her past performance.

I don't win awards," she said. "I don't, and that's fine by me. There are certain things that used to really get me down, and one of them is when people said I'm not a true country girl, and two is losing out on awards.

The country star says she's changed her perspective on things. "People see country music in different ways," she said. "To me, it's about sharing your genuine story. Whether it's a banjo or a modern beat, it's country music to me." She added that getting to perform at major award shows like the CMA Awards or the ACM Awards is an accomplishment in itself. "After adjusting my way of thinking, I'm really excited to perform for most of my shows."
